Biography

Alan Belcher is an influential Canadian conceptual artist recognized for his pioneering work in "photo-objects" and his foundational role in the 1980s New York art scene. Born in Toronto in 1957, Belcher is a largely self-taught artist. He moved to New York City in 1977, where he received what he considers his formal art education through active participation in the East Village art scene. He has lived and worked in various international hubs, including Vancouver, Cologne, and New York, before returning permanently to Toronto. Notably, Belcher maintains a strictly independent practice and decidedly does not apply for or receive government art grants.
